Merry Xmas 1998

The Chui’s family like to share with you the peace, the joy and the "true" meaning of Christmas as seen by their five little children.

Arnold (8 yr.), full of confidence in his knowledge, says that Christmas is "a wonderful time of giving and receiving (of Presents)" and we celebrate Christmas because it is the birth of God’s son, Jesus, who came to earth "to make people believe in God". But why does God want people to believe in him? "You are driving me to a dead end, mummy", says Arnold suspiciously, "I have enough (of mummy’s interrogation)", and ran off.

Zoe (6 yr.) knows for certain that Jesus is Mary and Joseph’s baby (because it is in her school’s nativity play) and we all celebrate his birthday because he is "a special baby from heaven". She absolutely loves Christmas time because she gets to splash snowballs onto Cordelia’s face.

Why do we celebrate someone’s Birthday after he is dead for hundred of years, why won’t we do the same for mummy’s Birthday? "Well, because Jeuses is an important person", replied Arnold and Zoe together. "Mummy is special but not important", added Arnold sympathetically. To help mummy out, since she apparently does not know anything about Christmas, Zoe went off to look for a "dictionary".

Cordelia (3 and half years) is not sure why everyone is making such a fuss about one little baby born in a stable, mummy has two at home and anyway, they are just tiny, smelly creatures that never stop crying, very annoying really when she is trying to play "Adiboo" on the computer or watch cartoon network. She likes the angels in the story much better. They wear lovely white frocks and have beautiful silvery wings at the back. And where do we find Jesus? "Oh, he just sleeps round the corner (in her nursery classroom)", replies Cordelia off-handedly. She sometimes goes to check if he is asleep, if not, she will make him go to sleep again.

Anthea (18 months) has just begun to "talk" and finds a faithful audience in that lovely giant tree in the house, the one with lots of interesting, colourful and shiny things dangling from its branches. What great fun it was to pull those off and dissect them to see how many bits and pieces they can fall into.

Melchior (3 months), although bearing the name of one of the three wise men in the Christmas story, I am afraid he is not "travelling afar" yet but might possibly gazed at the stars at night from his bouncy chair if he is not already lost in his dreamland.
